Encyclopaedia of Mining at Chorley Family History Research Centre

Picture
The Chorley Heritage Group has recently acquired a collection of 28 lever arch files containing an ‘Encyclopaedia of Mining’. Chorley Family History Research Centre agreed to give this wonderful resource a home in our Library.

This collection is primarily in two parts. The first being details of collieries and pits throughout England – whilst not totally comprehensive, it primarily covers Lancashire but then spreads out through the country. This contains pictures, maps of mine locations and mine workings, geological plans, and descriptions of the collieries and mines. The second part is transcriptions of newspaper articles detailing accidents and fatalities associated with the mines.

The whole collection is hand written and drawn and represents the life work of a very dedicated gentleman.

We are currently digitising and indexing the collection making it fully searchable and viewable on our computers.
